The New Professionals Section of Library Association of Latvia (LAL NPS) was founded in April 2009 by a small group of energetic, smart and enthusiastic library science students who decided to join forces to promote the new library specialist recognition in Latvia and abroad. Until September 2014 young professionals with great responsibility and enthusiasm led Dace Ūdre. Her ability to interest and motivate people often have been a key factor in the New Professional Section. At years 2014-2019 leader of section was Elīna Sniedze. The present leader is Aiga Pīķe.
At present, the section has 37 members representing various libraries, or otherwise related to library and information sector. All members has different age (we don’t have age limit), education, direct job specifics and leisure activity, but we are all united – we love libraries. We know how great, dynamic and interesting profession a librarian is. Therefore one of the the section’s mission is to promote and raise prestige by providing young professionals the best opportunities for career development. Because we are a new generation of librarians!
Thematic sections cover issues concerning:
- Children and school libraries
- Book and library history
- Study of local history
- Marketing in libraries
- New professionals
We host some smaller and bigger events for students and librarians, we write blog posts, we share information about all events and job offers at our social media, we go to students at lectures and tell about their opportunities – ERASMUS, BOBCATSSS and LAL NPS, etc.
We have created an event that we host every year and it’s called – “One day in the Library life – LibdayLV”. It’s one week every year when librarians post at the social media things they do at work to show that we are not just giving and receiving books, to share ideas with others, or to show to the students their future work. And to show their posts we use hashtag #LibdayLV.
Our biggest event that we are proud of is 4CanGurus. We have hosted it 4 times and it has been great success! Watch the video below to see how it has been:
